In order to promote environmental conservation and community involvement, the 119 Territorial Army Infantry Battalion at Kench’s Trace, Shillong, organised a plantation drive today under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.

The event was also held to celebrate its Platinum Jubilee and part of the broader effort to promote afforestation and sustainable living practices.

Led by Colonel Devashish Nayak, the troops of the battalion planted hundreds of saplings, symbolizing a united commitment to nurturing and protecting the environment.

Divisional Forest Officer of the Social Forestry Division, East Khasi Hills, H. Lato who attended the event as guest highlighted the importance of such community-driven initiatives in safeguarding our ecological future. “The Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative exemplifies the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. It is inspiring to witness the dedication of the Territorial Army towards this noble cause,” she remarked.

Colonel Nayak emphasised the battalion’s dedication to social and environmental responsibilities. “As we celebrate 75 years of the Territorial Army, this plantation drive reflects our ongoing commitment to serving the nation not just in defence but also in environmental stewardship. Our troops are proud to lead by example and contribute to a greener tomorrow,” he stated.

The event also included informative sessions on the significance of afforestation and the benefits of a green environment, encouraging participants to take active roles in the care and growth of the planted saplings. This educational component aims to foster a deeper understanding and lasting commitment to environmental conservation among the community.
