Meghalaya Police has cautioned citizens against falling prey to misinformation and fake news on social media.
The warning comes after a viral video was circulated that a migrant worker was brutally killed in the state during one of the check drives carried out by the Khasi Students Union (KSU).
The video claimed that a painter was killed and others hacked to death in broad day light.
“A viral video is doing rounds claiming a migrant worker being targeted in the State. But, this video has no basis in truth!,” Meghalaya Police said in its social media handles.
Police said, the video originated from outside India and is being maliciously circulated.
Meanwhile, the KSU carried on with its own sanctioned checking of documents today.
The Mawthadraishan circle of the union pushed back five migrant workers employed at a petrol pump in Nongshillong and seven from Mawphanlur. Contractors were also warned not to bring in workers from outside the state without valid documents, the KSU said.
The KSU is adamant about pushing back migrant workers without ‘work permit’ from the State stating it is one of its “social duties” to protect the indigenous community from illegal influx.
The checking is to protest the Centre’s delay to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the Meghalaya Residents Safety & Security Act by the government in the state.
A number of KSU leaders have been served with summons by the police in connection with the drive and the reported assaults of workers at Laitumkhrah and Polo areas.
Late reports also said that six labourers engaged in the maintenance of the Shillong-Umiam Road at Mawiong were assaulted on July 6.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has filed an FIR at Mawlai police station and also shot off a letter to the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner calling for a safe environment for the project workers to execute their assignments.
Meanwhile, chief organising secretary of the Fedeartion of Khasi Jaintia and Garo Peoples (FKJGP) Khrawkupar Nongsiej has been summoned by the Rynjah police on July 16 in connection with a drive carried out at Polo and Demseiñiong on July 8.
The FKJGP, a pressure group which is close to the KSU, had carried out checking of shops if they have availed trading license from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
Led by Nongsiej, the checking was done in the presence of officials of the Shillong Municipal Board, Labour, Food & Safety and the Enforcement Wing of the district council.
