Two truckers’ organisations have blamed overloaded trucks plying for the damage caused to National Highway-6 which is the arterial road connecting Guwahati in Assam to Meghalaya and further into Silchar (south Assam), Mizoram and Tripura.
Leaders of the East Khasi Hills Truck Owners and Transporters Association and the East Jaintia Hills Limestone Suppliers Association, yesterday met the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills demanding action against all overloaded trucks plying on NH-6.
The truckers’ bodies pointed out that overloaded trucks caused more damage to the road, especially along the Narpuh circle.
According to them, the road pavement has been severely damaged forming potholes and bumps.
Seeking strict action under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 and the Prevention of Damages to Public Properties Act, 1984 against overloaded trucks plying on the stretch, especially in the Narpuh-Sonapur bridge, the truckers’ associations also urged the deputy commissioner to take steps for repair the road.
