Newly elected Lok Sabha MP from Tura seat, Saleng Sangma is likely to resign as MLA in the Meghalaya Assembly within this week.
Sangma who is the sitting MLA of the Congress party from Gambegre constituency won the Lok Sabha election from Tura seat with a thumping margin against sitting MP Agatha Sangma of NPP.
As per rules, an MLA who contested the MP election and won will have to quit one of the seats in the next 14 days.
Recently, Sangma visited the Parliament Annex in New Delhi to register himself as a new member of Parliament.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Congress leader Manuel Badwar said that Saleng Sangma’s victory signifies a revival of the Congress party in Garo Hills.
He expressed delight at the party’s resurgence and praised Sangma as a strong leader.
“His (Saleng’s) victory is a sign of revival for the Congress party in Garo Hills,” Badwar said.
Badwar emphasised that the Congress is non-divisive and prioritises the welfare of all communities, which has contributed to its nationwide revival.
Regarding the Congress’s loss in the Shillong seat, Badwar attributed it to anti-incumbency and the strong support for the VPP.
Despite this, he highlighted that the VPP’s decision to sit in the opposition, rather than supporting the NDA, provided hope for everyone.
Badwar however said that the Congress still received over two lakh votes from every constituency, despite the anti-incumbency and strong wave of the VPP for the Shillong seat.
Informing that the Congress party would soon hold an executive committee meeting to discuss the Lok Sabha poll results, Badwar however said that there are no discussions to change the Congress state president Vincent Pala.
He expressed optimism about the Congress’ prospects in the country, particularly in light of the declining trend of the BJP.
