Necessary arrangements for counting of votes on June 4 for the Lok Sabha elections in two constituencies of Meghalaya have been made, officials said.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) BDR Tiwari today convened a meeting with representatives of all political parties in his office chamber where a brief presentation on the counting of votes was made.
The CEO’s office stated that the counting would commence at 8:00am.
“A total of 369 tables will be used across seven districts under 1-Shillong (ST) parliamentary constituency (PC) and 244 tables across five districts under 2-Tura (ST) PC,” the CEO said. 15-Mawlai assembly segment, which is the largest in terms of number of electors, will be counted in nine rounds”, he added.
There will be eight counting centres for 1-Shillong (ST) PC and five counting centres for 2-Tura (ST) PC. A total of 18 counting observers have been deployed by the Election Commission of India (12 for 1-Shillong and 6 for 2-Tura PC),” the CEO stated.
Lok Sabha polls for the Shillong and Tura constituencies were held on April 19, with Shillong parliamentary seat seeing a voter turnout of 73.78 per cent and Tura seat at 81.37 per cent.
In Shillong seat, incumbent MP Vincent H. Pala of the Congress is pitted against Ampareen Lyngdoh of NPP, Ricky A J Syngkon of VPP, Robertjune Kharjahrin of UDP and two independent candidates – Lakhon Kma and Peter Shallam.
For the Tura seat, incumbent MP Agatha Sangma of the NPP is locked in a four-corner contest against Saleng Sangma of Congress, Zenith Sangma of Trinamool Congress and independent candidate Laben Marak.
