Various parts of the State today witnessed heavy rains leading to swelling of major rivers and landslides.

Due to incessant rain, the level of Umngot river in West Jaintia Hills and Lukha river in East Jaintia Hills has risen dangerously.

The rising waters of Myntdu river in West Jaintia Hills also inundated many paddy fields along its banks.

Today, Pynursla recorded the heaviest rain of 308 mm and this has caused worry about the condition of the Rngain area which is vulnerable to landslides.

Similarly, Sohra witnessed heavy rainfall today although there were no reports of damage to properties. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rain gauge at RKM Sohra recorded rainfall of 284.4 mm. In the lower parts of Sohra, the rainfall was recorded at 181.6 mm.

Mawsynram recorded a rainfall of 198.4 mm followed by Khliehriat (184.2 mm), Ratacherra (72.3 mm), Jowai (50 mm) and Umiam (45.6 mm)

The IMD has also predicted moderate rainfall will occur at most places in the State tomorrow and on May 31.

It also said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty wind over most places.

Meanwhile, South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Tableland Lyngwa informed that heavy to very heavy rainfall has been reported today in South West Khasi Hills.

“This continuous downpour is likely to exacerbate the current situation, potentially leading to more extensive damages,” Lyngwa said.

He also informed that efforts are underway to restore electricity and network connectivity, to improve communication and coordination.

“Currently, there is no electricity in the affected areas, further hindering communication and response efforts,” Lyngwa added.

Due to heavy rains, 13 houses were reported affected today. Continuous heavy rainfall has impeded field staff from conducting a comprehensive assessment.

Immediate relief including essential food supplies and tarpaulins, has been provided to severely affected households in Lawblei village.

The Deputy Commissioner has advised the public to remain indoors and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
