Commissioner and Secretary in the Information and Public Relations Department (DIPR), Vijay Kumar Mantri, today convened a meeting with state filmmakers here today to explain the government’s plan for a Meghalaya Film Policy.
Filmmakers in attendance included Dominic Sangma, Pradip Kurbah, Simi Khongthiang and others.
DIPR will draft a “comprehensive” film policy “tailored to address the issues faced by local filmmakers,” a press release said today. “This policy aims not only to support local filmmakers but also to attract filmmakers from outside the state by providing facilities for film shooting and opportunities for local artists to participate in their projects.”
The policy will also facilitate the distribution of films at the state, national and international levels with the aim of promoting the growth of the film industry in Meghalaya. Additionally, initiatives to promote film culture among citizens, such as forming film clubs in schools and colleges, were also discussed.
Mantri encouraged filmmakers to unite under one association to streamline and gain access to government schemes and initiatives provided by the central government and other agencies. Other matters discussed included the need for a ‘single window agency’ to make it easier for filmmakers to get necessary permissions, promotion of local films through dedicated theatres and cinemas, the development of a promised OTT platform and publicity campaigns.
