Two fire incidents were reported from different areas of the state today.
In the first incident, a power transformer ignited into flames, causing concern among residents and passersby in Lumshatsngi locality in Shillong.
The incident happened around noon. Timely intervention by the fire and emergency service prevented the fire from spreading to nearby residents.
Witness said that if the fire service was a few minutes late, the transformer would have exploded and cause massive destruction.
The fire fighters put up a brave fight as they were hindered by the ferocious winds.
The exact trigger behind the fire was yet to be ascertained. As the MeECL workers are still on the ground to restore the transformer, certain areas of the locality are without power till filing of this report.
The incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of maintaining electrical infrastructure to ensure public safety and uninterrupted power supply in the region.
Meanwhile, a rubber-laden truck caught fire along NH-6 in Jyntru under Ri Bhoi district today leaving a helper injured.
The incident happened at around 2 pm.
Police said the truck bearing registration number JK 05 H 0666 was completely gutted in the fire despite efforts put in by fire fighters.
According to the driver, he had parked the truck on the roadside and was taking a break to get respite from the heat.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
