The driver of an autorickshaw was killed and two others travelling in the vehicle were injured after a head-on collision with a truck on the Shillong Bypass today.
The incident occurred at around 11:30am at the Umlew bridge when the auto (ML 10 C 6897) and the Assam-registered truck (AS 01 GC 0191) collided.
The three-wheeler was being driven by Dhiren Chandra Barman of Umling village, Ri-Bhoi. It is believed that the auto was travelling at high speed at the time of the crash and that Barman had lost control of the vehicle. The driver of the truck fled the scene and is being sought by police.
Barman died on impact while the two injured occupants were taken to Bhoirymbong for treatment.
