Police in East Jaintia Hills began 2024 with a big drugs bust as they arrested a suspected drug smuggler and seized more than half a kilogramme of heroin from his possession on New Year’s Day.
Information was received by police that one Afjal Hussain Barbhuiya (32) was driving a tourist vehicle (ML 05 Q 1702) from Silchar towards Khliehriat.
Accordingly, a checkpoint was set up on National Highway 6 by district police and the anti-narcotics force at 4:30am.
The car was stopped and the drugs were found inside. The heroin was found contained within 66 soap cases stashed in the dashboard and within the front bumper. The drugs weighed a total of 643.81g.
The contraband was seized and Barbhuiya was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
