Congress Rajya Sabha MP Dhiraj Sahu’s Rs. 200 crore and counting stack of cash galvanised the BJP in Meghalaya to organise a protest in the state capital to draw people’s attention to the kind of corrupt practices that the grand old party has been indulging in.
The numerous karyakartas and morcha members who turned up at the BJP’s Shillong Office, raised slogans like “C- for Congress, C – for Corruption” and “Down down Congress”.
Speaking to the media, BJP’s chief spokesperson, Mariahom Kharkrang said, “For years these parties have been indulging in corrupt practices under the garb of promoting secularism. At BJP, we have a zero tolerance towards corruption. This is people’s money and every penny of this ill-gotten wealth must be returned to the people.”
He also pointed out that leaders of other parties, especially the Congress, have ruined and made the country poor.
The spokesperson affirmed the party’s commitment to confronting corruption within the state. He emphasised that the party will vehemently oppose corrupt leaders once evidence is substantiated and matters are brought to light.
When questioned about whether similar protests would be conducted against state leaders implicated in corruption, Kharkrang stated, “If there are evidences and proof, the party will definitely take up the matter.”
Regarding the contentious issue of illegal coal mining in the state, Kharkrang highlighted the government’s consistent submission of affidavits in succession. He noted that the matter is presently under the jurisdiction of the High Court, indicating ongoing efforts to address and resolve this concerning issue.
The state BJP chief spokesperson said that the party wants Meghalaya to develop and be at par with other states of the country.
Praising the party he asked to point out which state where BJP is ruling is not developed. Pointing out to neighbouring Assam which is ruled by the BJP, he said that amazing things has happened in that state during the saffron party’s rule even as he expressed hope that similar things will happen when the party rules Meghalaya.
“Then only you will realise how much we have missed in the past years,” Kharkrang added.
Meanwhile, State BJP vice president Gagan Jain expressed grave concern of the depth of corruption that is yet to be unearthed.
Jain emphasised the severity of the situation, remarking that while the Congress often portrays themselves as “mohabaat ki dukan” (shop of love), the reality seems to reveal a “corruption ki dukan” (shop of corruption).
