The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Kisan Morcha organised a meeting at the party’s Shillong office today on the occasion of Farmers’ Day.
The event was envisioned to not only mark this but also to serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas to ensure a brighter future for Meghalaya’s huge farming community.
To ensure a free flow of thoughts and creation of an ideas bank, the party brought together under one roof various stakeholders of the community – prominent farmer leaders, agriculture scientists, policy makers and common people with knowledge of farming practices. John F Kharsiing, who heads the Meghalaya Land and Forest Owners Association, was the chief guest.
Newly-appointed BJP state Kisan Morcha president Ralden Bryan Shabong stated, “An overwhelming majority of Meghalaya’s citizens are farmers. If society and state are to progress to the levels we dream of, it’s important that the farming community be given every kind of financial, scientific and logistics support to help them create a better tomorrow. The party will go all out to ensure that numerous agriculture community-aimed schemes of the central government steered by the BJP reach the grassroots.”
Kharsiing stated, “A country has only two assets – soil and farmers. Without these two there will be nothing to eat.”
