Personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya intercepted and apprehended two Indian nationals loaded with sugar meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh.
The operation was carried out on Saturday near Hangaria bridge, East Jaintia Hills.
The two suspected smugglers were travelling in Bolero pickup trucks loaded with sugar sacks. They were parked around 1km from the Hangaria bridge.
The BSF carried out a special patrol in the area and spotted the two vehicles (ML 04 D 2343 and ML 04 D 6828).
When approached by the patrolling team, the drivers tried to escape by taking advantage of the dark but the troops swiftly apprehended both of them, a press release said today.
Upon interrogation, the detained individuals disclosed that the sugar consignment was intended for Bangladesh. The vehicles were registered in the name of Queendun Suting and Ibannangroi Suting, both residents of Nongbareh Lyntiara.
Simultaneously, in a separate operation, BSF personnel intercepted and confiscated various miscellaneous items worth over Rs 2 lakh intended for smuggling into Bangladesh. The arrested individuals and the seized items were promptly handed over to concerned authority for further legal action.
