One person died and another was seriously injured after the truck they were in went off National Highway 6 and into a gorge at Shangbangla, Ri-Bhoi, yesterday.
The West Bengal-registered truck (WB 91 8529), loaded with clinker, was travelling towards Guwahati when the accident occurred at around 10pm.
The vehicle was apparently travelling at high speed, lost control, jumped over to the other side of the highway and crashed into three makeshift roadside shops before going off the road.
The deceased was the handyman of the truck and he died on the spot. The driver was injured and taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for treatment.
