The State executive committee of NPP will meet here tomorrow to review the party preparations for the Lok Sabha elections and the elections to the two autonomous district councils (KHADC and JHADC) slated for 2024.
The meeting will discuss only the preparations for the Lok Sabha and district council elections and the process for seeking candidates for the two polls.
It may be mentioned that cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh is in the race for the NPP ticket for the Lok Sabha elections from Shillong seat. Sitting party MP, Agatha Sangma is likely to be renominated from Tura seat.
The entry of Lyngdoh into the race has made the tussle for NPP ticket for Shillong seat more interesting to watch.
Speaking to media persons here today, Lyngdoh did not reject news reports regarding her candidature for the NPP ticket for the Lok Sabha polls.
“As a party worker and one who is here to serve the people of Meghalaya, I will take up any challenge that my party thinks I am in position to take,” she said, adding that the final decision will be taken by the party.
Recently, the party is reportedly facing a lot of pressure from the State’s prominent business house, Dhar Group, to award the ticket for the Shillong seat to Lamare.
Lamare is the son of former Umroi MLA Ngaitlang Dhar, the elder brother of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
The Dhar Group is reportedly being backed by six to seven MLAs.
According to party sources, the push for Lamare has unnerved Himalaya M. Shangpliang who left the BJP and joined the NPP recently with an eye on the ticket for the Lok Sabha poll from Shillong seat.
Recently, NPP State president and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong had said that his party would announce the name of the candidates for the Shillong and Tura seats within this month.
He also informed that the party has not less than five to six aspirants for ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections.
