The State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condoled the death of PB Acharya, who served as Governor at one time or another of five North East states.
Acharya was also the BJP in-charge of Meghalaya in end of 1991, the BJP press release said. During his journey as in-charge of East Siang district (then Siang district) in the 1970’s Acharya helped erect many a milestone for the party and strengthened the grass roots.
In 1992, he brought L.K. Advani, then leader of opposition, to Meghalaya with the aim of motivating the party workers and spreading BJP’s message of unity in the State. He created the first BJP Meghalaya Pradesh State Executive Committee, unearthed local talents and helped build a strong worker base. His endeavours saw BJP Meghalaya field its first Lok Sabha candidate – Moina Singh Phyllut and BJP immediately established itself as a party of repute in the State, the BJP added.
In spite of an increased work load, the BJP said, his commitment towards Meghalaya remained steadfast and his dedication saw the party win the State Assembly Elections for the first time in 1998. Thereafter the Party has always brought a winner to the State Assembly.
“It’s time for the party to reflect upon and take inspiration from his life; a life that will always remain a story of grit, single minded dedication to a cause and simplicity that motivated an entire team,” the party said.
Meanwhile, the State BJP will hold a condolence meet at its office here on November 13.
