Police continue to make recoveries of drugs in the State.
In the latest incident, police in East Jaintia Hills apprehended a drug trafficker identified as Rofique Uddin Ahmed during vehicle checking conduct on National Highway-6 near Khliehriat police station today.
Ahmed was travelling in a night super bus (AS01 FC 7788) when police stopped the bus and inspected his belongings.
Upon inspection of his bag, police found 20 soap boxes containing yellowish powder which tested positive for heroin. The drugs weighed 274.23 grams.
Ahmed who is a resident of Telitakar Part 11 under Katigorah Police Station, Cachar was immediately arrested. A case against him was registered at Khliehriat Police Station under various sections of NDPS Act.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today praised the East Jaintia Hills Police for their recent success in seizing heroin worth Rs 1.5 crore.
Taking to the microblogging site X, Sangma voiced his concerns about the persistence of drug traffickers in targeting the youth of Meghalaya.
He lauded the East Jaintia Hills Police for their commendable efforts in curbing the drug menace.
“This resolute action is a testament to the steadfast commitment of @MeghalayaPolice under Dr. L. R. Bishnoi, Director General of Police, towards a #drugsfreeMeghalaya,” Sangma stated.
In another incident, Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) personnel of East Khasi Hills yesterday arrested a drug trafficker from Baghmara, South Garo Hills who has links with two other traffickers arrested from Nongmensong on October 24.
After interrogation, he led police to a rented house at Nongrim Hills here where 23.56 grams of heroin packed in two soap boxes was found.
The arrested person has been booked under the NDPS Act and investigation is on.
