Is Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma trying to make new friends in the Indian political spectrum ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections?
Although Sangma is the national president of the NPP which has political presence in Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland and also is part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), he has of late tried to reach out to other non-NDA parties and non-INDIA parties.
Sangma will attend the mass rally of Tipra Motha scheduled to take place on October 14 in Khumulwng, the headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
This was announced today by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma who is the chairman of The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance also known as Tipra Motha.
“On 14th October, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his cabinet colleagues will join our mega rally to show their solidarity and unity for our demand for a constitutional solution. I want to request everyone to come to Khumulwng to send a message that Tiprasa are not weak and they can fight for our rights,” Debbarma said today.
Meanwhile, Sangma also confirmed his attendance at the proposed mega rally of Tipra Motha.
“Looking forward to join my friend @PradyotManikya in Khumulwng, Tripura on the 14th of October, 2023 for the Mega Mass Gathering of @tipra_official. Join us this Saturday,” Sangma said in his post at X (formerly Twitter).
Tipra Motha is the main opposition party in the BJP-ruled Tripura. The party bagged 13 seats in the 60-member state Assembly polls in February 2023. It is also in power in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
It may be recalled that on September 7, Sangma met Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at his official residence Pragathi Bhavan in Hyderabad. Although not much is known about the purpose of the meeting, it was believed that the current political scenario in the country is among the issues of discussion.
Rao heads the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) which is ruling Telangana. BRS is not allied either to the BJP-led NDA or the opposition INDIA bloc.
Assembly elections in Telangana will be held on November 30. The polls are expected to witness a triangular contest between the ruling BRS, Congress and BJP.
