The World Bank has offered financial support to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to address solid waste management in five districts.
A meeting between the officials of World Bank and KHADC Chief Executive Member, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Deputy CEM Pynshngain N Syiem and the executive members was held here today to brainstorm and formulate sustainable solutions for handling of solid waste.
The CEM told reporters that under the KHAD (Solid Waste Management) Act 2020 the district council in collaboration with the World Bank aims to educate people about cleanliness and waste disposal management in their own homes.
He said the district council will soon submit a detailed plan of action to implement the programme, which is expected to begin within this month.
“We have requested the World Bank for its assistance right from creating awareness to setting up of the resource recovering centres (RRCs) which will help in the proper management of waste at the village level up to the district level,” the CEM said.
Meanwhile, a site visit to Umkhen, Umpling, Pynthorumkhrah, RRC Mawlai Mawroh and Marten is scheduled between representatives of the World Bank and the KHADC tomorrow.
