State NPP president Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi today made an extraordinary claim that his party secured the biggest vote share from Khasi-Jaintia Hills region in the recent Assembly elections in the State.
As witnessed in the February 27 Assembly elections, NPP managed to win only eight out of 36 seats in the entire Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.
However, Kharlukhi refused to accept this fact and even stated that his party would win the Lok Sabha elections in Khasi-Jaintia Hills because of the party’s huge vote share.
When media persons today asked him if the NPP will find it difficult in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Khasi and Jaintia Hills, Kharlukhi disagreed stating that NPP has the highest vote share in the recent polls.
“If you look at NPP vote share we are the largest party with highest vote share garnered in this election so if we go by that then we will win in the Khasi-Jaintia region. Anti incumbency has been there for so long even before elections so I won’t call it anti incumbency but I would call it pro incumbency and it was proven in the results,” stated Kharlukhi.
The State NPP chief also said that his party would put up candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Shillong and Tura seats although the names of the candidates have not been decided as yet.
Asked if former Mawsynram MLA Himalaya M. Shangpliang who is now with the BJP will be joining the NPP and contest the Lok Sabha polls from Shillong seat, Kharlukhi said that so far there was no official confirmation of Shangpliang joining NPP.
“I have only seen it in the media,” Kharlukhi added.
