Editor,
The recent attempted kidnapping of a young student at a school in the heart of Shillong by unknown non-tribal individuals whose faces have been circulated in the social media constantly reminds us that child kidnapping is on the gradual rise and we must all be on our guard. It is also imperative for the district inspector of schools to conduct checks whether urban and semi-urban schools or colleges have adequate security measures and do a security audit.
What is surprising is the usual statement from the State police that they are short of manpower, which translates into shortage of funds and not manpower. What is stopping this government and the Home Department from rectifying the problem and moreover the absence of the State home minister calls for a public demand that his department takes actionable steps and not mere lip service.
When governance fails the blame should not be shared only by officials but by the very people who were elected to govern.
