The Monolith Festival, organised by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will make a comeback in December after a gap of 10 years.
Today, the KHADC’s executive committee visited the site, the Heritage Village at Mawphlang, and found that certain renovation work needs to take place before the event.
The inspection party comprised KHADC Chairman Lamphrang Blah, executive members Rangkynsai Kharbuki, Victor Ranee, Carnes Sohshang, officials from the Public Health Engineering, Public Works and Power Departments and members of Hima Mawphlang.
During the inspection it was found out that many of the huts at the heritage village need renovation for the festival.
The officials from the various government departments who joined the inspection have given an assurance to fully cooperate for the festival in terms of water supply, electricity and repair of roads, Kharbuki said.
A meeting will soon be held to plan the renovation and earmark expenditure needed for the festival.
Kharbuki said that the last time the festival was held was in 2013 and he promised that this year’s event will be organised in a grand way to show off the heritage of the Khasi people to the world.
Ranee said that fund constraints were the main cause for the council to halt the festival in 2013.
Blah said that if the council has the ability it will try to organise the festival annually.
