The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has lodged an FIR against a Twitter account by the name “Legal Rights Observatory-LRO @LegaILRO” for spreading false information and inciting communal violence regarding the incident at Mahadev Khola.
In the FIR lodged with the SP (City), the KSU said that on July 24, there was a scuffle between two parties at Mahadev Khola, Shillong and has no connection with the union and its members were not involved in it.
However, the KSU said that “Legal Rights Observatory-LRO@LegaILRO” tweeted that the union was involved in assaulting priests, devotees and other individuals. The KSU said that the tweet was false and misleading and that it was intended to disrupt religious harmony and instigate communal violence between communities.
The KSU has urged the authorities to take necessary action against the Twitter account and the person(s) handling it. The KSU has also urged the authorities to suspend/delete the Twitter account.
They also urged the authorities to take appropriate action against perpetrators who incite religious and communal tensions between different communities, as well as Twitter accounts that spread hate mongering and false information to the public, and to suspend/ delete such accounts, as well as those who defamed the Khasi Students’ Union in the current case.
