Meghalaya paid rich tributes to the Khasi freedom fighter, U Tirot Sing Syiem on his 188th death anniversary today.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and a host of other guests attended the event and paid rich floral tributes to the freedom fighter for his sacrifices at his life size statue at Mairang.
Underscoring the government’s commitment to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of Meghalaya, the Chief Minister in address said, “U Tirot Sing was not only a remarkable freedom fighter but also a symbol of unwavering courage and resilience in the face of British colonial rule.”
He also urged students and youngsters to emulate the leadership qualities and perseverance of the historic leader.
“The government of Meghalaya believes it is of the utmost importance to document the lives and accomplishments of our extraordinary historical figures by utilising the talents of the youth. The government supports the efforts of the Khasi Autonomous District Council and other district councils to record and publish the biographies of our leaders,” he said.
The Chief Minister also visited Nongkhlaw, the birthplace of U Tirot Sing and interacted with the proud members of the legendary leader’s community. The local residents organized an elaborate celebration of the leader’s life, through cultural music, dances and a play organised by the office of the Syiem Nongkhlaw Syiemship.
The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, observed the occasion with floral tributes paid to the legendary warrior. The role of Tirot Sing in the fight against British imperialism during the Anglo-Khasi War for 1829-33 was highlighted.
On the occasion, an input distribution programme was also organised where progressive farmers were handed quality millet seed as part of the International Year of Millets.
It was also informed that the ICAR’s guesthouse has been named after Tirot Sing. A large portrait of the freedom fighter was also unveiled today.
Members of civil organisations — the Khasi Students Union and the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council — also paid floral tributes to Tirot Sing Syiem at various locations in the state capital.
