      Fisheries Minister Alexander Laloo Hek attended the two-day Fisheries Summer Meet 2023 at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, which concluded today.

      Organised by the central government’s Department of Fisheries, the summer meet was to celebrate the achievements of the Indian fisheries sector, the Department of Fisheries and the ‘Start-up Conclave’.

      The event was held in concurrence with National Fish Farmers Day 2023.

      The events included police and technical deliberations in the sector of fisheries, exhibition on fishery start-ups, fish farmer producing organisations and cooperatives along with a virtual inauguration of fishery projects across the country.

      Hek led the Meghalaya delegation accompanied by AL Mawlong, Director of Fisheries.

      Sixteen projects in Meghalaya were inaugurated today to the tune of a total of Rs 4.3 crore investment in Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaiñtia Hills, West Jaiñtia Hills, Ri-Bhoi, North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, and South West Garo Hills.

      Hek sought the central government’s attention and requested for an immediate intervention to address concerns relating to Meghalaya along with few suggestions on the need for timely release of funds and consideration of more than 25 percent to be released at one time, consideration for non-conventional energy support via solar power for intensive fish farming, subsidising quality feed and quality fish seedlings, encouraging ornamental fishery projects, support integrated farming with fish and poultry, fish and pig rearing, etc.

      Meanwhile, in Khliehriat, a programme for National Fish Farmers Day was organised by the office of the Superintendent of Fisheries.

      Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills A Baranwal, the district Superintendent of Fisheries H Kharbuki along with the beneficiaries participated in a programme organised by the central government’s Department of Fisheries at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu which was broadcasted through video conferencing.

      As part of the observation, 176 Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) projects covering 18 states were virtually inaugurated by the Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala.

      Additionally, for East Jaintia Hills, a motorcycle with icebox and three three wheelers with iceboxes under the PMMSY scheme were virtually inaugurated.

      Four beneficiaries benefited from the PMMSY scheme inaugurated today and the above-mentioned mobile transportation for fish and fish products was handed over to beneficiaries after the programme.
