Salil Gewali, a writer based in Shillong, was honoured with the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Rashtra Gaurav Samman by the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Foundation in Howrah, West Bengal.
The award was presented to Gewali by the Governor of Assam, Gulab Chand Kataria, at Raj Bhavan. At the programme, the Urdu edition of Gewali’s book ‘Great Minds on India’ was also released by the Governor.
Distinguished scholars and guests from Kolkata, Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur graced the occasion. The Governor praised Gewali for his book, which highlights the profound influence of ancient Indian literature on Western intellectuals.
The Urdu edition was translated by Syed Hussain of Hyderabad, edited by Abdul Khalique of Kolkata and published by the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Foundation. The book has now been translated into 13 languages.
The state governments of Punjab, Karnataka and Assam have agreed to translate and publish the book in their respective official languages, namely Punjabi, Kannada and Assamese, Gewali said in a press release.
