The Education Department will re-draft Meghalaya’s education policy to bring it in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020,
This will make it easier to implement in the state, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma said today.
According to the minister, Meghalaya cannot implement the NEP this year as it will be going beyond the state’s limitations in terms of infrastructure and other factors. Therefore, the government plans on re-drafting the existing state policy to incorporate feasible aspects of the NEP.
Asked whether implementing the NEP means adopting National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books and the syllabi they teach, Sangma said that his department intends to introduce enough subject matter to also lay focus on Meghalaya’s history and culture.
Meanwhile, higher education institutions have been asked for their suggestions and these will be forwarded to North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
Talking about limitations, he said that having an insufficient number of faculty is a huge burden on private and government institutions and, unless that is taken care of, it will be difficult to implement the NEP properly. “We won’t say we are not prepared but we do not have enough, we have a lot of limitations in infrastructure and faculty,” Sangma said, adding that he will meet the Union Education Minister to apprise him of the challenges and seek assistance.
