The Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) has given seven days time to the National Highway Authority of India restore and repair a stretch of the highway in Umtyra, damaged due to heavy rainfall in June 2021.

For the third time the FKJGP, Khliehriat circle had raised the issue with the district administration. Yet no sign of restoration of repair is visible till date.

Today, members of the organisation led by President Michal Chyrmang met East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal and submitted their third missive.

The FKJGP had first raised the matter on July 28, 2022 and again on April 14, 2023.

Chyrmang said the organisation has given seven days time to the National Highway Authority of India through the DC to begin restoration works, or face protest.

He said the stretch of NH 6 near Umtyra Infiltration Check Point is expected to get worst this monsoon as the damage part of the road is still lying in the same condition since 2021.

Chyrmang said this causes frequent traffic jams in the area as well as a continuing fear in the minds of the people, as to the safety of that particular stretch of road.
