The KSU today urged the Conrad Sangma government to call the Voice of the People Party (VPP) for talks on the issue of reservation policy. It also said that further delay on resolving the issue could ignite “fire”.
A delegation of KSU leaders led by its president Lambok Marngar and general secretary Donald V. Thabah met VPP president Ardent M. Basaiawmoit who is on an indefinite hunger strike since May 23 at the Additional Secretariat parking lot here.
Speaking to media persons, Marngar said that the KSU fully supports the agitation by the VPP president for review of the reservation policy.
“The State government should consider the sentiment of the people on this issue. It should relook and review the reservation policy. This issue is not of just one person or one political party. It is an issue of the entire Hynniewtrep people. Five days have passed since Basaiawmoit went on hunger strike but the government is still adamant. The government should immediately call the VPP for talks on the issue. In this party, we see several intellectuals who are its leaders. So the government should call them for talks for the interest of our youth and our future generation,” Marngar said.
He also said that failure to engage in dialogue could escalate the situation and lead to undesirable consequences.
On the committee set up by the government yesterday, the KSU president said that the job of the committee was only to discuss and examine the roster system.
“This committee should also discuss the reservation policy. Don’t let the fire engulf. The government should understand this. Listen to the voice of the people. Settle this matter before things go out of control,” Marngar added.
