Conrad, Himanta to kick off second phase of border talks today

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma will meet in Guwahati tomorrow to kick-start the second phase of boundary talks between the two states.

The talk will be held at the State Guest House at Koinadhora, Khanapara, Guwahati at 11 am.

In the second phase of boundary settlement, the two states will try to resolve the differences in Langpih, Borduar, Deshdoonreah, Block-I, Block-II, Psiar-Khanduli, and Nongwah-Mawtamur (Garbhanga).

Resolving the boundary disputes in these areas is a tough job given that a number of lives have been lost in the dispute between the two states.

Regional committees comprising ministers and MLAs for six areas in Ri-Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills districts have also been appointed to take the talks forward.

Assam and Meghalaya were having 12 areas that were under dispute along the inter-state border.

Earlier in March last year, both the state governments signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) resolving their border dispute in six of the 12 areas of difference in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Assam and Meghalaya two months after a draft resolution to resolve their border disputes in six of the 12 “areas of difference” along the 884 km boundary was submitted by the Chief Ministers of both states to Shah on January 31 for examination and consideration by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to the MoU, for the 36.79 square km of land, Assam will keep 18.51 square km and give the remaining 18.28 square km to Meghalaya.
