The second batch of 17 evacuees mostly students who have been stranded amid the ongoing violence in Manipur reached the State today.
Meghalaya began the evacuation of its citizens yesterday by detailing flights in coordination with officials and the India Army and safely brought back 66 students studying in Manipur.
The State government has identified another 165 citizens who will be evacuated in the next four days. Fifty of them will arrive from Imphal tomorrow, 70 on May 8, 30 on May 9 and 15 the next day by special flights arranged by the State government.
Two officers have also been deputed to travel and stay in Imphal to oversee the transfer of citizens from the state and arrange for local support for safe travels for the students, a statement from the Chief Minister’s office said.
The transport department has been detailed to arrange vehicles for the evacuees arriving at Guwahati Airport as well as food.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today held a meeting with officials on evacuation of students from violence-torn Manipur.
Sangma took to Twitter and wrote, “Held meeting with officials to check the status of the evacuation process of students from Meghalaya in Manipur. The team is working round the clock to ensure our students from the state are back home safe.”
