The State government today held an emergent meeting to discuss possible ways to evacuate over 200 students from violence-hit Manipur.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the government is monitoring the situation and state officials have been asked to make arrangements to air-lift students.
“We are in touch with the students of the different institutes and we are also making arrangements to try and evacuate our students at the earliest by transport or by air, so that they can come back home safely” Sangma said.
He also said a dedicated 24 hour help line number will be installed for any emergency or urgent matters. “I would like to urge Meghalaya students studying in Manipur as well as parents not to panic,” he added.
The Chief Minister said the government is in touch with its counterpart in Manipur.
He said the present situation in Manipur is “disturbing” and appealed for peace. “I would urge all citizens of Manipur to maintain peace and harmony and not to do anything to hurt religious sentiments. Whatever complications may be there, we should try and resolve those matters in amicable manner,” he said.
