A candlelight vigil will be held on May 5 to remember Walinda Binong, the fashion student who died last week while studying at Mody University in Rajasthan.
The vigil will be held in front of the Nongpoh Shopping Complex and will be organised by the Dorbar Shnong of Nongagang Marngar from 5pm. Members of the public have been invited to attend to show solidarity with the family of the deceased and to honour the departed.
Although authorities in Rajasthan claim that Binong took her own life, family members suspect foul play, with her father citing the jealousy of her peers as one possible factor, while friends think her boyfriend may have been an issue.
Meanwhile, the Nongpoh Area Women Welfare Association (NAWWA) has extended its condolences to Binong’s bereaved family members and offered prayers for her eternal peace. The association also expressed concern over incidents against North East students in other parts of India and is suspicious about Binong’s death. They have urged the authorities in Meghalaya to take the case seriously and help the family members obtain the truth so that justice can be served.
