In a further twist to the already heated discussions and demands over changes to the job quota system in the state, the East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) has requested the Deputy Commissioner of the district to strictly implement guidelines over the appointments made by the District Selection Committee.
In a memorandum handed over to the DC, Abhilash Baranwal, today, the EJNC pointed to a notice in 1972 on the reservation of vacancies in services/posts.
EJNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh said that district-level jobs were often awarded to candidates who are not permanent residents of the district but who live in other parts of Meghalaya.
The pressure group has no problem with this if and only if there is no suitable candidate from within East Jaiñtia Hills.
In the above cited notification, Para 2.2 states that while selecting candidates for such posts, preference should be given to local candidates residing permanently in the district in which the vacancies occur, Lyngdoh said.
Many such appointments, however, violate this guideline, with jobs offered to non-EJH residents.
The EJNC therefore approached the DC to see that this anomaly is rectified in future job appointments.
