In a relief to the common man, the fare in all passenger vehicles has been restored to the old rates that prevailed before the Covid period.
In an official statement, the Commissioner and Secretary of Transport Department informed that both the fare and seating capacity prescribed for travel by buses, Sumos and maxi cabs, local taxis, auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers have been reverted to the pre-Covid period.
The official said that the decision is as per the Motor Vehicles Act for all categories of vehicles subject to strict compliance of Covid protocols.
It may be mentioned that charging of hiked rates by taxis and buses has affected the passengers especially those coming from rural areas as they had to shell out at least Rs 600 each for a journey to Shillong and back.
Even in Shillong, parents and school children are facing the impact of the hike in taxi fare although the seating capacity was the same as in the pre-Covid period.
