Three fire incidents were reported in the State today. However, no casualties were reported.
In the first incident, five shops in Dombah, Sakwang under South West Khasi Hills district were gutted in the fire at around 12:30 midnight.
Though a team from the fire service reached the spot to control the fire, all the five shops were razed by inferno. The shops belonged to Bonlina Kharjahrin, Drip Wartde, Biak Wartde, Di-ioris Ramsiej and Ridalin Lyngkhoi.
While the cause of the fire is unknown, the loss is estimated at Rs 10 lakh.
In the second incident, a major fire broke out at a saw mill in 7th Mile, Upper Shillong at around 11 pm last night. The saw mill belongs to one Arbes Kharsati.
The fire was extinguished at around 2.15 pm after over two hours. Machines and wood worth lakhs of rupees were completely destroyed in the fire.
In the third incident, a goods truck was engulfed by fire at Shangbangla on National Highway 6 in Ri-Bhoi during the wee hours of Friday morning.
The Assam-registered six-wheeler (AS 11 D 3353) was ferrying flour, milk and oil to Shillong when what was believed to have been a short circuit within the vehicle caused it to go up in flames.
The driver, however, did not notice the fire and only stopped when alerted by members of the public. The Fire and Emergency Service doused the fire and police are investigating the exact cause.
