Two-time legislator Thomas A Sangma was elected unopposed as the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly at a special session held here today.
He was the only contender as the opposition declined to contest the post.
Thomas took the place of United Democratic Party (UDP) president and Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh, who held the post of Speaker from 2018 to 2023.
In his inaugural speech, Thomas said, “We all know that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has the reputation of being one of the most disciplined in the country. I will continue to maintain this tradition. I expect the members to debate vigorously but to maintain mutual respect and not to abuse our parliamentary privileges. I will be impartial and fair but also firm.”
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed sureness that with the vast experience Thomas has he will be able to improve the overall functioning of the house.
Opposition MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit stressed that the Speaker should maintain neutrality and not compromise on it at any cost.
“This is a sacred house of learning and not a secret house of earning,” Paul Lyngdoh remarked as he congratulated the new Speaker.
