Trinamool Congress leader Dr. Mukul Sangma said that today’s meeting of non-NPP, non-BJP political parties discussed the need to come together and prevent the “corrupt” NPP-BJP alliance from forming the new government in the State.
“We discussed the need to stand firm in their commitment to ensure that the State is not subjected to misrule and unprecedented blundering that has inflicted irreversible damage to the State’s fiscal health and also forced Meghalaya to have an infamous tag of being named as the most corrupt State in the country,” Dr. Sangma said.
Stating that the election results gave “a mandate for change,” Dr. Sangma said, “It is the responsibility of each one of us to ensure that the tag given doesn’t become synonymous to the State. That can happen when we stop those same people from forming the government.”
“Protecting the larger interest of the people and protecting the interest of the State. That must supersede everything else,” he added.
On the claim by NPP leader Conrad Sangma that the NPP-BJP alliance has the number to stake claim and form the new government, Dr. Sangma said that such a thing can be claimed and counterclaimed.
On the demand for a Khasi chief minister, Dr. Sangma said he has no problem with it.
“Whatever demand, issue, concern and condition, it is an internal exercise. The chief minister can be Khasi so what is the problem? We have had B B Lyngdoh, we have had E K Mawlong, Captain W A Sangma in the past. But our deliberations today did not revolve in that kind of perspective,” he added.
UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said that he was contacted by all political parties yesterday after the Assembly election results were declared.
Lyngdoh said that the UDP was keen to have an alliance with non-NPP, non-BJP parties and that is why it proposed a meeting with leaders of the parties here today to discuss all possibilities of forming an alliance.
