Trinamool Congress (TMC) Meghalaya leader Charles Pyngrope condemned the recent violence meted out to a female member of the party in Umroi.
The woman who was manhandled is also the wife of the sitting TMC MLA for Umroi, George Lyngdoh.
“Where is law and order when a female member is attacked?” Pyngrope said today.
He added that this incident should not be categorised as a TMC versus NPP (National People’s Party) issue as a thorough understanding of what actually happened will show that the TMC was innocent.
The two parties have been involved in ugly spats that have turned violent in Garo Hills, with dozens from both sides arrested by police.
According to the TMC, Therezia Syiem had confronted some men who were playing excessively loud music outside the family home late one evening. She and her brothers were then viciously assaulted by the group and police failed to respond to phone calls made by Lyngdoh.
“If a TMC worker or the family of the TMC worker is at home and somebody is playing loud music and you’re calling the police but nobody’s coming, then the lady goes out and she is manhandled, then how is this the TMC way of doing things?” he said, adding that it is the NPP that controls the police in the state.
