Foiling the attempts of smugglers, vigilant troops of the 193 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya seized cosmetic items worth Rs 47 lakh yesterday along the international border in East Khasi Hills.
The consignment was confiscated when smugglers were trying to pass the consignment as head loads into Bangladesh through a riverine patch in the Barmanbari village. The BSF personnel, on observing them, challenged them to stop but they fled, leaving behind the huge quantity of cosmetics.
The seized items were handed over to customs officials for further investigation and legal action. Indian cosmetics items are in high demand in Bangladesh, leading to their illegal flow.
