Former Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Lanong has promised at least one flyover within a year if elected in the 2023 state election.
Lanong, who has been out of the Assembly for 10 years, said he fails to understand why no government has been able to build any flyovers to ease Shillong’s worsening traffic jams.
“When we look at Guwahati, there are numerous flyovers unlike here where we have none,” he told Highland Post recently. “Why can’t we have even one flyover, for instance from Laitkor to Mawiong, to ease the extreme traffic jams? If I am in the chair in a coalition government I challenge that you will see within a year a flyover work will materialise and we can do it because all it takes is how you manage the budget.”
Touting his years of experience, Lanong said that, as a six-time MDC, former CEM in the district council, Speaker of the Assembly and Deputy CM, he has the requisite experience to push work through. “But if you don’t know how to manage the budget, then it becomes hard, like in the current scenario where there are only businessmen who know only business and don’t know how to govern the state,” he added, in a not-so-subtle dig against his political rivals. “I am a clean public figure and with my vast experience I can do much better than many.”
