The Mait Shaphrang Movement has sought the intervention of the State Women’s Commission in the full implementation of the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012 to deal with the increasing problem of abandonment of women with children without any child support in the State.
A delegation of Mait Shaphrang Movement led by its convener Michael N. Syiem today had a meeting with State Women’s Commission chairperson Phidalia Toi and other members of the commission.
During the meeting, it was proposed that in order to make the marriage law effective in dealing with the abandonment problem, the State government would be urged to reintroduce by amendment the portion of the principal act of 2012 which states that, “Whereas further it is mandatory for married men and married women to compulsory furnish a marriage certificate for all official purposes”.
The meeting also proposed that the term “official purposes” should be redefined to enlarge its scope of implementation so that the purpose of the marriage law is served in providing a solution to the problem of abandonment.
Further, the importance of decentralising the powers to register marriages right down to the level of Block Development Officers was also proposed.
