The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has supported the call for a separate Garoland state.
Yesterday it was announced that a rally will be held on October 29 in Tura to rekindle the demand. Organisations demanding separate Ladakh, Bundelkhand, Vidarbha, Purvanchal, Harit Pradesh, Gorkhaland, Bodoland, Tripraland, Dimasa, Karbi, Mithila and Vindhya Pradesh states are also likely to join the rally.
“We fully support our brothers and sisters who call for seperate Garoland state,” HITO said today. “We would also like to support the Council of Nokmas the apex traditional body who have also demanded for special recognition and who are part of the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya which include Federation of Khasi States for their support on the demand of the Khasi States as per the treaty of the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement which was signed and accepted by Governor General of India on 17 August 1948.”
The pressure group went further and claimed that villages occupied by Khasi-Jaintia people that are part of Assam and Bangladesh should also form the separate Khasi-Jaintia state.
“There is full justification for creating more states in India,” HITO said, referring to the steady division and combination of erstwhile states and provinces since Independence to 2019, when Ladakh was split off from Jammu and Kashmir.
