The A’chik Organization for Social Welfare (AOSW) has condemned the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) for not approving the person who was apparently elected to be the new Lasker of Rongsak village court, instead preferring a National People’s Party (NPP) member.
In a release today, the AOSW said that a “free and fair” election for Lasker was conducted on August 24, with Janggin T Sangma securing 31 out of 34 votes cast by Nokmas. There were 46 eligible A’king Nokmas, out of which 39 voted; five had their votes rejected on a technicality.
The AOSW added that Kewingson Marak won two votes and Arbitson Sangma one. Janggin’s name was forwarded to the GHADC for approval by the Chief Executive Member, Arbinus R Marak, who happens to be from the NPP.
Party members, it is alleged, then conspired to derail the result and, as a result, Janggin’s appointment has yet to have been approved.
The AOSW condemned the GHADC for interfering in the “original, ethnic judiciary system” by bringing party politics into the role of Lasker, AOSW general secretary Premier N Sangma said.
