A free medical check-up, distribution of gifts and awareness on legal rights of the elderly marked the celebration of International Day of Older Persons at Raja Apal, North Garo Hills, today.
Organised by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer in tandem with the District Legal Services Authority, the programme was aimed at people above 60 years of age. The participants gained valuable information on old age welfare schemes, medical treatment, pensions and other issues.
Addressing the gathering, Dr CM Sangma, the Medical and Health Officer of Resubelpara Community Health Centre, highlighted the importance of the programme, which ran on the theme of ‘Resilience of older persons in a changing world’.
Advocate Bianca K Marak of the DLSA spoke on free legal aid services and the Senior Citizens Act. She urged participants in need of legal help to avail legal aid services that are free of cost.
