Neelam Misra, the wife of Meghalaya’s new Governor, Brig BD Mishra (retd), has called on the people to preserve and promote the traditional loin loom weaving of the North East.
Misra said this at the screening of a documentary to celebrate traditional weaving practices of Arunachal Pradesh (of which her husband is also Governor) at the Assam Rifles headquarters in Laitkor here today.
Mishra said that the rich tradition of loin loom weaving is prevalent only in the North Eastern region now and we must all put in a concerted effort in its preservation and encourage local weavers to carry it forward.
As weaving is mostly carried out by women, its preservation will facilitate women empowerment and thereby guarantee socio-economic development, she said, adding that it would also contribute to the central government’s
She said that the loin loom weaving tradition will contribute to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’ s vision of self-reliance campaign. Mishra added that traditional weaves must go from ‘local to global’ and must be the fashion statement of the region.
Also present at the screening were Pushpa Nair, wife of the Director General of Assam Rifles, Lt General PC Nair and president of the Assam Rifles Wives’ Welfare Association.
