Tired of waiting for the state government or their MLA to help them repair their local public road, the youth of Mylliem Rngi recently took matters into their own hands.
Speaking to Highland Post, the Rangbah Shnong of Mylliem Rngi, W Sohlang, said that the road has been unattended for several years and was in extremely deplorable condition.
Although their local MLA, Hamletson Dohling, is a cabinet minister, he has been unable to help, reportedly telling a village delegation that there was no scheme from which to draw funds for the repairs. However, Sohlang hinted that the village has not been favoured because it did not support Dohling’s candidacy in 2018.
“Our youth are tired of waiting for the concerned authority to address our plight so they asked for permission and repaired the portions of this 1km road that are badly damaged themselves,” Sohlang said. “We have to repair this road because small vehicles can no longer use it and there have been many complaints.”
Villagers contributed to the cost of the makeshift repairs. Mylliem Rngi has a population of around 700, most of whom are farmers. Taxis and other commercial vehicles would charge extra to carry passengers and goods to the village because of their reluctance to use the bad road, Sohlang informed.
