The inauguration of Crowborough Hotel was delayed to enable President Draupadi Murmu to open it on her expected visit to Shillong, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today.
The hotel, work on which has been going on and off for 30 years or so, was meant to be opened today but this was delayed as Murmu is expected to visit the North East very soon, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today, although official communication has not been received.
The government was asked for a list of projects that could be inaugurated by the President and a list was provided to New Delhi, including Crowborough.
However, a snag developed in that the hotel project is set to be operated by Taj Hotels, a private firm and the President’s office would prefer she inaugurated government projects. Work is also still going on at the site.
The government has now decided to go ahead with the inauguration but with the dates pushed back by a week or more.
Meanwhile, concerning the job opportunities at Crowborough, Sangma said that since it is being run by a private firm, it is Taj who will carry out recruitment. Nevertheless, the government is hopeful that a large number of locals will gain employment at Crowborough and at the nearby Courtyard by Marriott hotel, which is also expected to be complete in a few weeks.
