The third online GeoQuiz 2022 was jointly organised by the Krishnanunni Memorial Charitable Trust and Department of Geology at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) yesterday.
This programme was organised to pay tribute to Kalathinkal Krishnanunni, former Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), who has immensely contributed towards the mineral and energy resources of the North East region and preparation of development of village economy maps (DOVE Map). It was also held to celebrate Teachers’ Day.
Department of Geology head Prof Devesh Walia gave the welcome address wherein he mentioned that Earth science study is increasingly becoming more important because of the relationship it has with climate change studies. More people are required in Earth sciences to help continue research and help it progress as part of the study of climate change, he said.
There were more than 90 registered participants from the North East, who had to answer questions on geosciences. First place went to Abul Kader Laskar of Holy Cross School in Silchar. He was awarded Rs 15,000 in prize money. Ibrahim Laskar of the same school came second and received Rs 10,000, while Aman Teotia of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 in Tezpur finished third and received Rs 5,000. The top three also received proficiency certificates. All other participants were awarded with certificates of participation.
Speakers on the day described Krishnanunni as being instrumental in the field of geological studies and helping the younger generations to pursue research in this field.
In the valedictory address, delivered by JK Bhalla, Former Director of the GSI, Krishnanunni’s noteworthy contributions were highlighted. Bhalla also congratulated the winners and motivated them to improve the nation and society.
