A public meeting and signature campaign to pursue with the demand to upgrade Mawsynram block to a civil sub-division was held at Mawsynram market today.
The meeting was organised by five pressure groups—KSU, HANM, FKJGP, HYC and HUAM—wherein leaders stressed on the need for upgradation, which according to them would benefit the people of Mawsynram on many fronts especially to bring administration closer to the people.
Leaders at the meeting also warned election aspirants not to make the demand their plank to score brownie points in 2023 since it is an issue that has been raised by all the residents of Mawsynram.
It may be mentioned that Mawsynram is in East Khasi Hills but is on the border of South West Khasi Hills. It was carved out since 1962.
According to the groups, the upgrade will benefit 164 villages and a population of over 54,000 with literacy rate of 58 per cent. They lamented that being the oldest block, the aspiration of the people has never been fulfilled for 20 long years.
